Reserve the Spirit Rock today!

 Our SFES Spirit Rock is available for families to reserve and show their school spirit! You can reserve the rock for anything – your child/grandchild’s birthday, to recognize your favorite teacher or staff member, congratulatory events, good luck on competitions and tournaments, or recognizing milestones.  

The SFES Spirit Rock is available for $10/day. Sign-ups are in 24 hour periods (MAX of 2 days/student) from 5 pm the day before until 5 pm the day you reserved it.  For example, if you sign up for Thursday, September 15th you may paint the rock after 5pm on Wednesday, September 14th and will have it through 5pm on Thursday. Please triple check your dates!  

To sign up:

STEP 1:
  • Sign up for your date(s) using the button below (this will take you to a "Sign Up Genius"). Be sure to click "Submit and Sign Up" on the Sign Up Genius page so that your dates will be reserved.​
 STEP 2: 
  • Within 1 week: Pay online (easiest) or send a check made out to "SFES PTO" with "Spirit Rock" in the notes section. Be sure include your name, your child's ​​​name, and reserved date on your envelope to help us track your payment.
  • Please note: If you are unable to pay within 1 week, we will have to release your date.

Spirit Rock Rules & Guidelines

Painting Tips!
  • Sign-ups are in 24 hour periods from 5 pm to 5 pm. For example, if you sign up for Thursday, September 15th you may paint the rock after 5 pm on Wednesday, September 14th.
  • The cost is $10. You can pay online using this page or send your money in your child's agenda in an envelope marked "PTO Spirit Rock". Please be sure to include your name, your child's name, and the date you have reserved online.
  • There is a maximum of 2 consecutive days/student.
  • Payment must be received within 1 week of booking your date or you forfeit your right to paint the rock on that dates.
  • SFES PTO reserves the right to block dates for school use.
  • Families must furnish their own labor, paint, and supplies. Wear old clothes! Only the rock may be painted. Please take care to not damage the surrounding area, and pick up all trash after painting. Please be kind to our environment and recycle your empty cans.
  • The best paint to use is spray paint. You will probably need 2-3 cans for a good base coat and additional paint for your design. The quantity needed will depend upon the color you are using, the color already painted on the rock, and weather conditions. Remember, latex paint or paint that is rolled on will take longer to dry.
  • If the rock is painted over by someone that is not on the sign-up sheet, it is not the PTO or school’s responsibility. NO profane words, symbols or any derogatory or offensive messages will be permitted on SFES' Spirit Rock. Sherrills Ford Elementary School reserves the right to remove any content, message, or language from the SFES Spirit Rock that is deemed inappropriate.
  • The family painting the rock assumes liability for any individual or member of the group who may be injured, or who may incur clothing or other personal property damage.
  • No refunds will be issued in the case of bad weather. If wet, the rock can be towel-dried before painting and the paint will adhere even in the rain and or snow.
The SFES Spirit Rock runs on the Honor Code, with the hopes that everyone will respect these guidelines. All money raised from the use of the Spirit Rock will go towards supporting the various PTO programs at Sherrills Ford Elementary School.

  1. Premium spray paint works best (Rustoleum, etc) vs. a generic store brand.
  2. 2-3 cans of spray paint should cover the entire rock for your base coat. You will probably need to spray it a few times for complete coverage.
  3. Once you have the base coat done, use chalk to sketch out your design. Try to do large shapes so that it’s easy to see from the road and so that you can use spray paint for most of it.
  4. Stand back from the rock (closer to Sherrills Ford Road) to make sure you can see the design from there (the rock is slanted back at the top which sometimes makes it hard to see).
  5. Spray paint your large areas. If you mess up, use your base coat color to fix the mistake.
  6. For more detailed areas, use a can/tube of paint and a paintbrush. While outdoor latex is best, regular artists acrylic seems to work well too (even in rain).
  7. Make sure to bring paper towels to wipe any drips
  8. Bring a cup of water if you are using a paintbrush.
  9. Wearing rubber gloves will help keep your hands clean.
